Exhibit description

At the end of the 19th century, gas meters appeared with an automatic slot mechanism. They were operated by inserting an appropriate token to start the gas. The gas volume provided at one time was 0.5 or 1 m3, which was reflected in gas token values.

There were two reasons for the development and popularisation of automated gas meters. First, if you did not pay, you could not use it, so there was no problem with unpaid bills. The second was to facilitate the work of meter men, who, for gas meters of this type, did not have to calculate the consumption according to the meter recordings but only emptied gas meter containers for coins or tokens. The tokens were returned to a clerk after they were used and collected by the meter man, and a potential user could purchase them.
