Exhibit description

This construction plan specifies the positioning of the most important element of the gasworks furnace.

Retorts were fire-resistant chambers filled with coal, in which gas was generated. Initially, gas-generating furnaces only had a few retorts, but their numbers were gradually increased. This drawing illustrates the construction of horizontal furnaces, with two and three retorts. Such solutions were initially used in Paczków gasworks. However, they were only used for a short period of time. Soon, they were replaced by new furnaces, with an increased number of retorts, to enable higher gas production capacity.
