Exhibit description

Gaslight was not only brighter than candle flame, but it also had a cooler colour.

Perhaps this is why this chandelier was decorated with crystals resembling icicles. Each of its burners had a separate valve, so it was possible to accurately adjust the illumination level. This made it possible to create the right atmosphere in one Wrocław drawing room, where this gas chandelier once hung.

The owners of this item decided, however, to keep pace with the times, and replaced it with an electric chandelier. After it was acquired for the museum’s collection, the exhibit was restored and regained its original gas-lit splendour.
