Exhibit description

Poland’s regaining of independence after 1918 did not take place overnight. This is evident even when we look at the way in which Poles used to pay for gas.

At that time, automated gas meters were commonplace in Polish homes. In the part of Poland previously annexed by the Kingdom of Prussia, the tokens featured words in the German language. The gasworks in Grudziądz, which was the first to issue tokens in Polish, was an exception.
