Exhibit description

Coke, made by heating coal in the absence of air, continues to be used by the gasworks. This raw material burns more efficiently than ordinary coal, as any pollutants are removed together with the gas. As a result, once processed in retort furnaces, coke was carefully removed using these coke barrows. It arrived in the furnaces while still hot and was immediately extinguished.
