Exhibit description

The functioning of this locomotive demonstrates the severity of the safety measures which had to be observed in the gasworks.

This vehicle was powered by steam generated by boiling water, but unlike other locomotives, it had no firebox. Locomotive 4676 carried the coal, which was needed to produce town gas, to the municipal gasworks in the Tarnogaj district of Wrocław. To prevent the gas stored in the tanks from exploding, the locomotive was powered by an external steam accumulator. One “refuelling” with steam allowed the locomotive to travel approximately 500 metres.
